I've found that my 50mm f1.8 yields acceptable and quite good portraits on DX, actually. Doubtless, your instructor was talking about the unflattering perspective 'distortion' of a lens like that in people photography. If you put in positive numbers into photoshop lens correction it makes it more "pin cushion" and if you put in negative numbers it makes it more "barrel". Certainly, the kind of distortion you find in a lens like a 50mm will have no real effect on a portrait. This type of distortion below is called "pin cushion". Also if you don't center the igram well it could be quite a bit worse (there's more distortion towards the edges). Note that this test in photoshop just does one type of distortion but it's the most common type and corrects for most of the visible distortion of typical lenses. I concluded that it's probably not something one should worry about. Values up around 20 would be for things like fish eye lenses which wouldn't be appropriate for photographing fringes anyway. He tested other lenses and most were between -3 and 3. He tested the same lens I had and also got -0.5 for proper correction. There is this nice person on the internet who "characterized" distortion for many lenses - he has lots of lens reviews.
And this simulation is with 40X the distortion my camera has. The second biggest change was in Y Astig which went from 0.075 to 0.065. The biggest difference was in X Coma which doubled from -0.027 to -0.057 waves. I processed the unaltered and photoshop distorted images in DFTFringe and there was not much difference. So I took an old igram of a parabolic mirror I own and purposely distorted it with +20 (40X worse than my lens). So my lens is 0.5 (unknown units) "pin cushion". Also I stopped down the image (as recommended by Bruce) at the same distance from camera lens to stop as would be found when photographing through the bath (long discussion elsewhere). Also I photographed it such that the pattern was the same distance from camera to mirror-under-test as from camera to test pattern. So I did some reading and tried some software but ended up doing something quite simple - took my grid photo and loaded it into photoshop and went to "filter -> distort -> lens correction" and played around with keystone, rotation and distortion correction until I got the image perfect. I tried and gave up getting Dale's lens distortion analyzer to work - it's built into DFTFringe. If you want to sell a lens or camera, use /r/photomarket instead.Quick summary - don't worry about lens distortion.
